Global business leaders need to come together

The beginning of The B Team

The B Team is a not-for-profit initiative formed by a global group of business leaders to catalyse a better way of doing business, for the wellbeing of people and the planet

Founded in the belief that the private sector can, and must, redefine both its responsibilities and its own terms of success, we are developing a ‘Plan B’ – for concerted, positive action that will ensure business becomes a driving force for social, environmental and economic benefit.

Plan A – where business has been motivated primarily by profit – is no longer an option.

We are focused on driving action to meet a set of Challenges that underpin Plan B – by starting ‘at home’ in our own companies, taking collective action to scale systemic solutions and using our voice where we can make a difference.

OUR VISION OF THE FUTURE

is a world in which the purpose of business is to become a driving force for
social, environmental and economic benefit.

Business is now waking up to the reality that if we carry on using the natural resources of the world unsustainably, they’ll quite simply run out. With a burgeoning population, more people are living in poverty than ever before, inequalities are increasing in many parts of the world and unemployment rates are at frightening levels.

Civil Society alone cannot solve the tasks at hand and many governments are unwilling or unable to act. While there are myriad reasons we’ve arrived at this juncture, much of the blame rests with the principles and practices of ‘business as usual’.

These are not the outcomes we envisioned as we grew our companies; this is not the dream that inspired us. And the overwhelming conclusion we’ve reached is that businesses have been a major contributor to the problems and we, as business leaders, have the responsibility of creating sustainable solutions.

If we leverage the many positives of business – the spirit of enterprise, innovation and entrepreneurship that has helped realise improvements in quality of life and enabled technological and scientific progress – we can create an unprecedented era of sustainable, inclusive prosperity for all.

The time has come for us to play our part in finding the solutions. That’s why we formed The B Team.

OUR MISSION

is to catalyse a movement of business leaders driving a better way of doing business for the wellbeing of people and planet.

As business leaders, we know that what we’re proposing will be a challenge, or even an affront, to many of our colleagues and competitors. But we’re confident that those who choose to work with us will see that in the long run what’s better for the planet and its people is also better for business. If we can achieve a critical mass of these individuals, it will be possible to ‘tip’ behaviors that will be adopted by the majority.

This will require reinventing both how and why we do business. The ultimate aim, with support, energy and ideas — and yes, constant, frank criticism — is to get millions of business leaders committed to a better way of doing business.

Plan A – where companies have been driven by the profit motive alone – is no longer acceptable. It’s time for Plan B.

The Story So Far...

In 2013, following a series of workshops with civil society leaders, systems experts, sustainability pioneers, economists and entrepreneurs, a group of business leaders came together to advance a plan for better business. Inspired by the work of Lester Brown and the B Corp movement, they called it “Plan B”. From these discussions emerged The B Team we have today.

The launch of The B Team triggered extensive consultations on a set of Challenges that would provide a framework for Plan B.

There was a phenomenal response, with over 1200 Plan B kick-off events in more than 470 cities and 73 countries around the world, in which business leaders, civil society leaders and experts helped give shape to the plan.

The dialogue continues. The journey towards Plan B is an on-going process we are accelerating in 2016, in collaboration with the ever growing group of leaders working toward a better way of doing business.

The B Team is grateful for the support it receives from Ford Foundation, Kering Group, Guilherme Leal, Strive Masiyiwa, Joann McPike, The Tiffany and Co. Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, Unilever and Virgin Unite and for the contributions of past supporters Derek Handley and One Young World.
