Today Tata Motors, India's largest automobile company, became the second Indian company to pledge to use 100% renewable power in all its operations, joining the RE100. “The manufacturing sector accounts for enormous electricity consumption. Helping to switch this demand to renewables will not only reduce our carbon emissions but also will lead to long term financial savings," said Tata Motors Global Head – Health, Safety, Environment and Chief Sustainability Officer, Arvind Bodhankar, of the commitment.
Currently about 8% of Tata Motors energy comes from renewable sources, primarily wind power, and they will be looking for more opportunities to source power from the grid and solar projects to meet their goal. “By joining RE100 Tata Motors is sending a clear market signal that business wants more renewable energy on the grid," said Krishnan Pallassana, Executive Director, India at The Climate Group.
The RE100 is a collaborative, global initiative of influential businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity, working to massively increase corporate demand for renewable energy. 54 companies are committed to the RE100, including; BROAD Group, Salesforce and Unilever. The private sector accounts for around half of the world’s electricity consumption. Switching this demand to renewables will accelerate the transformation of the global energy market and aid the transition to a low carbon economy.
