Sheryl Sandberg, and other prominent female executives are becoming quite well known, but the reality is that there is still a lack of females occupying the top parts of the corporate ladder. However, the reality is that women are well represented in the workplace overall, so a pipeline problem exists in the journey from mid-level to executive.

BCG has explored this issue, and in a new report argue that traditional affirmative action programs, or the act of simply adding more female board members does not come close to solving the problem.
